Marc James – virus or hoax?

Here is a stupid forward I got on Yahoo! Messenger about a supposed virus. Can anyone confirm this is actually a virus and not a hoax? Even if it was, use Gaim on windows or linux and AdiumX on the Mac and you wont be getting any viruses.

If a Marc James wants to add you to their list dont accept it. Its a virus. Tell everyone on your list because if somebody on your list adds them you will get it too. It is a hard drive killer and a very horrible virus. Please pass this on to everyone on your list. We need to find out who is using this accounts. Sorry for the inconvenience. Right click on your group name of your buddy list and click Send Message to all. Copy and paste this message

  • Look, there are like five marcjames's in the community, i'm gona test this myself so piss off until then.
  • Great website. I want you to respond well to my reassuring lump A joke for you! What is always behind time? (besides myself) The back of a watch.

  • Marc James
I am the real Marc James, and would never want to harm your computer. Pretty sure this is a hoax, I will not come over and trash your system unless you really want me to and will provide the beer.
  • Hilary
No such virus. Who has ever seen a damaged hard disk by Mark James virus or received the Mark James message? It is only these warnings we get. Once you see a message asking you to send it to EVERYONE on your list, it is likely to be hoax. Ignore it.

It's a painfully obvious hoax, it doesn't do anything because the whole theory of operation behind the "virus" in question is impossible...That is, unless, you think everything in movies like "The Net" and "War Games" was real. In that case, I would also suggest unplugging your computer and putting it in the closet, because you just failed the gullibility test and shouldn't be on the internet.
  • Not this Ashley Marc James!
This is supposed to be a hard drive killer, but what all does it do?
  • Dave
First off, do you really add someone you don't know and have not talked with to your messenger list? If you answered yes, it's okay. Just turn your computer off, unplug it and put it in the closet. You'll be fine.

Adding people you have talked with, in chat rooms for example, is still taking a risk. You may talk to someone half the night and they wind up giving you a "Marc James" ID to add to your list. They'll have a good reason for giving you a different ID than the one they're using, too. "Oh, I just use this ID in chat rooms. I don't have a messenger ID under this name." Etc., etc.

The "virus" is most likely the message itself. Don't panic, in such a case it's most likely just an irritant. Pass this on and let's add to net congestion. We can do it!
I searched Google and all I could come up with was more questions regarding the validity of the "Marc James Virus".
One would think if it were truly a hard drive killing virus, you would find more than questions about it somewhere.

The absolute best thing you can do if you are concerned about this kind of thing, if you are going to engage in chat room activities, is to back up a GOOD WORKING COPY of your hard drive to an external disk and disconnect the disk before going into a chat room.

You could use a recovery disk to get you going again if you should lose your information. But that means having to reinstall ALL those programs you use that didn't come with the computer. Hopefully you downloaded and saved ALL those programs somewhere other than the disk you just lost. If you like wasting time, this option is for you.

I can't tell you how many times I've tried to use XP's Restore feature only to have it tell me it can't perform the requested task. Worthless. Just my opinion, of course.
