I had a site make it to the front page of Digg awhile back and hostforweb shut it down. At first they weren't going to bring it back up for 2 days, but I finally managed to talk them into bringing it back on so I could install caching. Once it was up and running they seemed happy with it and a few days later I made some further tweaks to reduce the database load, got in a chat session with one of the techs and load tested it. They said they they didn't notice any increased processing on the server and I was hitting it pretty hard. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed, but I think it should be good. The problem with shared hosting is that they can't throttle individual accounts. They just shut you down if they think you are using too much processor and most places don't provide you with any way to see what type of usage you are generating anyway. Installing a caching plugin (WP-Cache) for wordpress made them happy. The problem probably isn't the bandwidth--it is the processing requirements of Wordpress (and probably the forum).
