Zesthost is not first class
=======Zesthost is not first class
>>>>>>> .r7754I signed up for zesthost hosting for my project windows XP on an Intel Mac and I have to say that I am really really disappointed with how poor the hosting is. As I write this, the site is currently down. Since I signed up it has been down at least 10 times that I noticed - and who knows how many more times. It is constantly slow to load when there is not significant traffic and the host hasnt done anything to make it better. They told me they would move it to a new server, but I can say that if this is their new server I am on now, that it sucks.
Update : After receiving a lot of traffic last night my 125gb per month account is suspended? I have been getting around 8000 hits a day prior to yesterday when it spiked to 30,000. That does not generate 125gb of traffic in half a month considering that there is nothing but images to download on the site. This is quite ridiculous.
Update: Some have pointed out that it is more likely due to the processor demands rather than the bandwidth.
Update: winxponmac.com is up on a different server - windowsxp.onmac.net, forum.onmac.net and windows.onmac.net are not. I have been trying since 9:30 pm CST last night to get in touch with Zesthost but have had no luck until now - 12:30 pm CST the next day. Im going to try and pay them more to put me on a better server to get the site back up - I know it looks bad and Im sorry for the downtime.
Rackspace saved the day. We are now hosted on a 5-node cluster with true professionals at the helm. I have to say that my experience with rackspace has been top notch since we moved there 2 days ago. It sure beats mediocre virtual hosts.

“This account has been suspended” … I hope that’s because the recent news generated a lot of traffic, and they aren’t being petty

Apparently ZestHost is a UK outfit…which could make timezone differences a pain. A quick WHOIS gives this:
Hall, Peter peter@zesthost.com
7 Seaton Stables
Don Street
Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire AB24 1XS
GB
44.7739024433
After reviewing their site it really looks like a small-time operation. There are people offering free temporary space at the mac dual booting forums on osx86project.org…

Check out dreamhost.com– they’re responsive, on top of things, and I’ve never had an issue with service there.

I’ve had a similiar problem with hostforweb.com. Installing a caching plugin (WP-Cache) for wordpress made them happy. The problem probably isn’t the bandwidth–it is the processing requirements of Wordpress (and probably the forum).

So I’m guessing that they didn’t just let you pay more to bring it back up? I had a site make it to the front page of Digg awhile back and hostforweb shut it down. At first they weren’t going to bring it back up for 2 days, but I finally managed to talk them into bringing it back on so I could install caching. Once it was up and running they seemed happy with it and a few days later I made some further tweaks to reduce the database load, got in a chat session with one of the techs and load tested it. They said they they didn’t notice any increased processing on the server and I was hitting it pretty hard. I’m still keeping my fingers crossed, but I think it should be good.
The problem with shared hosting is that they can’t throttle individual accounts. They just shut you down if they think you are using too much processor and most places don’t provide you with any way to see what type of usage you are generating anyway.
